Terah, The Forgotten Father

In Genesis 15:7, God said to Abram (Abraham), "I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this (promised) land to possess it." But how God actually got him out of Ur is of interest to fathers.

Genesis 11:31, states that "Terah took Abram his son [and the rest of the family]; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there." Haran was a town Terah named after Abram's brother who died in Ur. Haran is about halfway between Ur and the Promised Land. It is from this halfway point that God said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you. (Genesis 12:1).

The important point for fathers is that Terah was God's agent. He took his family away from Ur and to a place where they could hear the Lord's voice. It was from Haran that Abram heard God's promise. As God's agents, dads get their families a little further down the road, a little closer to God and away from the baggage and burdens of their past. Like Terah, there maybe some dads who have lost a child to the distractions and dangers of this world - Like Terah, it's not too late to make some changes that will help the rest of their family to hear the call of God to follow Jesus.
